Tendinitis

The tendon is the part of the muscles that attaches to the bone. Tendinitis the name often given to inflammation or irritation of the attachment point of the tendon.

Tendinitis often affects:

  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Heel
  • Knee

Terms such as Repetitive Strain Disorder, Golfer’s Elbow, Tennis Elbow, Impingement, Bursitis, Runner’s Knee, Jumper’s Knee, Osgood-Schlatter and Achilles’ Tendinitis are commonly used.

Tendinitis can occur as a result of an acute injury or due to frequent irritation or inappropriate sporting or occupational movement. For example, it frequently occurs when people begin a new sport quite fanatically.

Very often the painful area is not the sole problem. For example tendinitis in the knee is sometimes associated with low back or hip problems, and shoulder tendinitis is sometimes a complication of postural problems.

The prognosis varies. Often significant improvement is felt with Chiropractic Adjustments to nearby joints and Trigger Point Therapy to surrounding muscles. Other times we also need to do many months of Exercise to improve whole-body posture and function. In such cases it demands much patience and determination from the patient.

The first step is to establish an accurate diagnosis and agree on a treatment plan that is appropriate for a particular patient.
